It seems as though the latest good work that the internet has provided is that more and more people take-in the news.

Accoirding to a recent more and more Americans are consuming the news thanks to the ever reaching wonders of the internet.

The study states that, "Roughly a third (34%) of the public say they went online for news yesterday – on par with radio, and slightly higher than daily newspapers."

This is quite a leap as most people were thinking that the WWW would be the death of the news - on only in its traditional sense - but also in the sense that people will just pick up on blogs and not engage in any other way. It goes on to say, "...And when cell phones, email, social networks and podcasts are added in, 44% of Americans say they got news through one or more internet or mobile digital source yesterday."

Overall this means that the normal PR needs a full face-lift. This is being worked on by the James Kinloch drones. They are getting there and are very close to a full all-guns-blazing digital PR that will shake up the digital world.

There are eight simple ways to make sure that international optimisation is part of your plan.

1. Identify your language of your site using a meta like like this < META Name = "Language" Content="country language">

2. Make sure you use the right domain extensions of the country i.e .co.uk .br .fr

3. Make sure the content is right by using the native language

5. Include all sorts of needed address factors on the site

6. Make sure you receive links from places within that country

7. Make sure you understand the slight changes in language

8. Host the site in the country that the website is based where possible

So make sure you do this and you will be on your way. Be creative and make sure that you creative seo ideas work well for your site.

So being into seo and being a geek is not all its cracked up to be. I found whilst speaking with a rather attractive lady that she was not into seo and the world of online marketing. In fact it was a huge turn off for her. So what do i do? do i lie and say im into things like shopping for clothes, going to china whites night club in order to get a hot lady? No, i think not. There simply must be some seo chick out there that is hot and loves to talked about geeky stuff like seo, creative consultancy, internet marketing etc? Please if you know of any then let me know.

iPhone posting geek style

So, I've fell victim to the hype and brought an iPhone. I must admit that I felt I had made a huge mistake when I brought this as it just seemed like a flash toy with no real substance. I was wrong. Now, I'm not going to say that the iphone is the best thing ever but it is good. The best aspect about it is the internet side of things. Anyway, I should go as in typical geek fashion I'm being unsociable. The reason? I'm round a mates an I'm writing this post via my iPhone. What a geek! So I know I'm meant to being do the top tips section but that can wait till the weekend. Instead today I will be talking to about my views in the normal geek way by telling about something that is not perhaps SEO related but I guess you could say it has something to do with internet marketing

Video does work as and seo tool but it also is starting to shift the way in which we communicate. Sites such as you tube have pushed the boundaries on citizen journalism to new levels. However, this medium has not finished developing yet. The next stage for video is about the people in the videos. Loic Le Meur is talking about this loads. In particular in reference to his own massively popular site http://www.loiclemeur.com/

You should all have a read about this guy as his newest project Seesmic is superb and is taking video away from the formal to the hyper intimate. Brilliant!

Tips and tricks: Part 1, Top ten ways to build links

I have been away with friends and what not over the new year in Scotland, lucky me huh?

Anyway im back and would like to mention the brilliant SEO Moz and some other ideas that are flying round the internet at the mo. In this section, Part 1, I'm going to quickly mention a great link building tip. In this 'Link building tips' series which will range from Part one to Part ten will consist of what i consider the current easiest top ten ways to build links. Its all about SEO you see.

So lets make this one easy as it the first installment.

Its all about wallpapers. Say it! wallpapers, wallpapers, wallpapers! A great way to build links is to use wall wallpaper sites such as wallpaper source. With this you submit a well designed wallpaper (ensure that images and brand logos are on th right and the wallpaper is what you would want to have up on your PC)and submit it to these sites. You can submit on any tag/term and many will be follow links to your chosen site. See easy!

This post is inspired by my brothers Charlie and Ady. They're both keen travelers with Ady running the massively popular blog 'Brit In Brooklyn'. BIB, as it's known, is all about his travels round this part of New York and it's often annotated by some of his amazing pictures. On that subject his other site is adriankinloch.net a must for any would be photographer.

Charlie's work is all about the sounds of the sub. Check out his page on myspace for some sweet beats. In particular listen to Dubble Bubble. It will make your balls (and mind) reposition themselves.

Oh poo. I forgot what I was talking about then! I was getting to carried away with dishing out 'big-ups' to my uniquely talented brothers. Oh yeah, thats right! I was talking about how great Google is for traveler's. The reason I say this is that they're making it possible to now measure distances of your epic routes with their distance measurement tool.

Keith Golden, Software Engineer, Google Maps says, 'We've added distance measurement to the line tool. Whenever you draw a line, you'll see the current distance as you move the mouse and add new points. The distance is also displayed in the info window when you click on your completed line.'

This application will also help me resolve some semi-serious disputes that I've had with my mates about which is a longer route for a given path. And don't forget the SEO effects that maps and universal search has on SEO

Search Engine Land has just published news that FaceBook is preparing to let crawlers onto its profiles hence making them available to search through Google's main interface (or the other search engines for that matter), Geek Smudge found out today.

The article makes an interesting point, however, in that such an aspect is not new and that this happens already. They cite an image of Google's home page bringing up results for a name:facebook.com search. It's been argued by Search Engine Land that the real issue from the announcement by FaceBook comes down to 5 key points:

1. The public listings and settings to expose them to search engines have been in place for at least several weeks. They are not new out today.

2. By default, these have been set to off, not to expose the listings.

3. Today's announcement is probably an heads-up that the default is being changed to on for all Facebook users without actually explicitly saying that.

4. Most of these public listings are probably not in the search engines yet, since most people probably haven't found or linked to their public profiles.

5. Today's announcement is also news that Facebook is going to do some SEO work to ensure search engines find these profiles.

I think that the second and last point are the most accurate and make the most sense. The issue of FaceBook doing SEO work to find user profiles could cause the biggest impact and strengthen the position of this social networking site.

Have a look at this guys views on FaceBook (see video below). I found this vid, titled 'Does what happens in the Facebook stay in the Facebook?' on Poo Tube and thought it would work well with this post. I would also have a look at the ribbing he gets from some of the users (some of them have a fare point)

Search Engine Land just published an article on Goggle’s new Universal Search. The article was interesting as it was combined with the outcome of an interview with Google’s David Bailey who heads up Googles Universal Search.

I'll try and break down the key points and implications. Please visit the Search Engine Land page to see a full run down in more intricate details. This is just the tabloid version.

• More frequently and more deeply intersperse web results with results from news, local business listings, videos, and scanned books

• If Google accounts are widely adopted then it means the SEO community will ultimately have even more targets and less measurable control in SEO.

• One of the SEO implications of this are brilliantly put by Search Engine Watch as they say,’ The impact of universal search on SEO is particularly interesting, because it means re-configuring how you look at SEO. SEO can no longer exist in isolation; we will have to look beyond organic results listings and adopt a more holistic perspective. Where the focus of SEO used to be site-centric, it must now include optimizing video, providing local listings, product presence in structured feeds into Google Base, flight fares and times, hotel locations, listings on review sites, good blog coverage, and on and on.’

• As better results are the end product of all Google’s efforts it will make people like Yahoo and Microsoft up their game.

Search engine news

Geek Smudge found a recent study by Nielsen/NetRatings that shows that Google has the the highest audience retention rate (for work and home) of all the major search engines. No surprise there. However, what was interesting was that there was a significant overlap of Google users to Yahoo and Microsoft suggesting that if they get their act together and start producing a better interface and more innovative applications they could really start biting into the the amount of usage that Google receives.

I agree with the response by Asia in that the only real way for Yahoo or MSN to take on the might of Google is by readjusting their interface. Yahoo in particular is just too much. When you come from a Google user background such as myself you can't stand the home pages of search engines like Yahoo. It's a complete mess. SearchMash and Ask (and Ask for Kids) are some great little search engines. The results are good (yes I know that SearchMash is a Google test bed) and the interface is spot on from a users perspective. Clear coherent results, whether they are video, blogs, Wikipedia or just the search results themselves are so nice to see out side of Google.

I have to say I really like Ask as it's a smart design, innovative and they are not forgetting about the importance of search.

Just quickly one second. I recently found this great website on SEO . It's pretty sweet and I advise any start up SEO types to have a look through this as it points out some very interesting things about the myths of SEO. The one in particular I liked was 'myth 2.' It reads ,'You need a Google Site map. If your site was built correctly, i.e., it's crawler-friendly, you certainly don't need a Google Site map. It won't hurt you to have one, and you may be interested in Google's other Webmaster Central Tools, but having a Google Site map isn't going to get you ranked better.'

Not quite releated: SEO

I'm very much aware that this is not fully related the previous posts on the Pro Evo Geek Smudge scene so ill try and find a way to relate it... Huh! Got it!

So, I was thinking of a way that I can make sure that this blog is well read and lots of relevant people see it and (hopefully) come and play in the event. I then thought, 'what about SEO?'

SEO, or Search Engine Optimisation, is defined by Thurow (2003) as, ‘the process of writing, designing, coding (in HTML), programming and scripting your entire website so that there is a good chance that your web pages will appear at the top of search engine queries for your selected keywords.’

Clear?

TrendMix expands on this fluid definition by saying that, ‘[Search Engine Optimisation is] The process of increasing the amount of visitors to a web site by ranking high in the search results of a search engine.’

Clearer?

I very much like TrendMix as they continue to say that a website which is listed closer to the top results is far more likely to receive visitors of the site that that of a listing that is several pages back. Although obvious and hyper-over-simplified it's good to see that TrendMix is making SEO clear for the starter. As a low level Webmaster I appreciated these types of sites that don't use over convoluted sentences about a certain subject.

So SEO. My friend recently said that it is a dark art. I guess this could mean that it is either a bad thing or a good thing. It's all about ethics! I believe that it many ways it is a good thing as it [SEO] makes sure that websites have more relevant content and that websites in general are properly maintained. Thats one side of it. I can't be arsed to talk about the other side. It's obvious. Hence you sense my stance on the matter. This may change knowing me.

Three key components should always be remembered when looking at SEO.

1. Text component

2. Link Component (FYI Although there is [and you may of heard off] the well documented use of Google Bombing this is very much for the pranksters of the internet and not something that any self respecting webmaster would do, isn't it? Well this is very much for the short term and SEO is more often than not about long term effects. More about this in later posts)

3. Popularity Component

Fact: All major search engines (Google, Fast Search, MSN Search etc) use these components as part of their search engine algorithms (Thurow, 2003)

We will go through all of these components in later posts. I have to go now as I am at work and should know better.

Well. Silly old me I forgot to let you know that the guy on the left is. It's the Spurs show pony Billy Wingrove. Accordinhg to the Metro (Thursday, 30^th August), ‘[Wingrove] is a freestyler who is a master of deft touches, sublime skills and jaw-dropping finesse.' True. To some extent he is very skillful. I would have to say that I don’t think that he is the master of deft touches, though. For me, deft touches are the privy of superstars like Zi Zou. He is the man with deft touches not you Wingrove!

Its on its way back

Some of you may remember the old site that was dedicated to the Pro Evo tournaments held in East London. For those that don't check out the old Blipblaume Pro Evo Geek Smudge site for a quick catch up. If you cant be arsed to do that ill give you a quick run down now.

In the last event two guys who still live with their parents Kevin Brown and Lee Ford (both pushing 30) made the final. Ford was playing as Everton and Brown as Arsenal. Brown won the match 4 -1. Some argue that the score line flattered Brown (single) but no one can deny that his chip against Steve McKenna in the Semi Finals was the highlight of the night. L Ford after playing so well though out did not perform at the highest level. Some would say that the atmosphere got to him but after reviewing the interviews we at the Pro Evo Geek Smudge would say that he was too sure of himself and did not pay enough attention to the threat of Brown.

So thats the last one.

It must be said that Brown was part of a huge scandal in the Semi Finals where the game had to be restarted due to their compete fooking inability in being able to click 'extra time' and 'penalties' in the set up menu. Steve McKenna still holds a grudge against Brown for this.

Bachelor McKenna is currently pretending to be a freelance journalist around Europe. An extract of his work is below:

"...Anyway...I got her back to the hotel and gave her a good pummelling and she had to do the walk of shame out of the palace this morning in her nightclubbing outfit and high heels, with the respected travel journalist walking out alongside her. Slag! She did, of course, insist that she never normally does stuff like that. Funny really, I think every girl I´ve shagged recently has said pretty much the same thing...mmmmm....."

Cultural, huh?

Since the win Brown is planning to start his own clothes shop. Rumor has it that it will be called 'Brown Pants.' Ford - after being humiliated in the final - has decided that he needs to work on his game and life. Since this he has improved his ranking online by 2000 places. He is currently single.

Kinloch (me) since being knocked out at the groups stages has put on weight and has perfected a few awesome tricks. His head is still big and he is starting to show a slight stammer. He too is single.

So the next big event is on its way soon. Only time will tell how big this one gets. It's looking like it will be around 40 - 50 people. All going well the venue will be near tower bridge, courtesy of GuildHall University.
